Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP)

Micah Challenge is one of the founding organisations of GCAP.  Micah Challenge is represented by Erika Izquierdo (Co-ordinator of the Micah Challenge Andean Region) on the International Facilitation Team and John Douglas (Micah Challenge, UK) on the Mobilization Task Group.  Micah Challenge National Campaigns participate in the national platforms of GCAP.

What is GCAP?

GCAP, the whiteband movement, is a global alliance of trade unions, community groups, faith groups and campaigners working together across more than 100 national platforms. The national platforms have different names, including 'Make Poverty History'.

GCAP aims to pressure governments to eradicate poverty, dramatically lessen inequality, and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. In particular, GCAP calls for:

  • Public accountability, just governance and the fulfilment of human rights
  • Trade justice
  • A major increase in the quantity and quality of aid and financing for development
  • Debt cancellation
  • That gender equality be recognized as a central issue for poverty eradication.

The common slogan that has been agreed for GCAP actions in 2007 is Stand Up and Speak Out followed by a political demand appropriate to national, regional and global contexts. This builds on the Stand Up action of 2006 while ensuring that we also Speak Out with strong policy demands to deepen our political impact.  Find out about your national GCAP campaign.
