Make your own bill of rights

This activity is adapted from an idea by Micah Challenge Portugal and could be used as a way of engaging people into thinking about the Millennium Development Goals. It was originally aimed at youth groups, but there is no reason why mothers groups, Bible study groups or individuals could also use it.

The basic activity is quite simple and you can change it to make it apply to your group setting:

  1. Find out about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). You can use the Micah Challenge website to find out all about them.

  2. Think about how each goal relates to a right that you think everyone should have and make them into a list. E.g. Goal 1 is about eradicating hunger – so you could write down that every person should have the right to have healthy and filling meals every day.

  3. Think about the privileges you have, and thank God for his blessings.

  4. Suggests actions for how people around the world can access the rights that you have written down.

  5. Get everyone in your group – and other people to sign the bill of rights.

  6. [[link] Invite your politician] to the group and show them your bill of rights and discuss with them the action points. Give them a copy of your bill of rights and talk with them about what you’ve learned about the MDGs. Ask them to try to apply some of your action points.

Feel free to develop this idea to fit with your group. Perhaps you could put a copy on a bedroom wall so that it becomes a reminder to prayer? If you have any more creative ideas that work well, then please get in touch so that we can share with others. Whatever you do with this idea, we hope you have a good time and that it spurs you into more action.
