MDG5: Improve maternal health

Target 1: Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio.

Target 2: Achieve universal access to reproductive health.

How does MDG 5 reflect God's heart and concern?

Pregnancy is clearly described as a gift from God (eg Gen 21:2; Gen 25:21; 1 Sam 1; Luke 1:26-45).  The Bible also emphasizes that in times of great suffering it is particularly dreadful for pregnant women and nursing mothers (Luke 21:23).  As we are powerfully challenged by Scripture to have compassion on the vulnerable and weak we have a strong motivation to want to improve maternal health.

Our campaigns in Australia and Germany are currently focussing on this MDG.
