Classroom poverty
I’m in the middle of an exciting 3 day forum with Micah Challenge coordinators from across Europe, Canada and North America...
Yesterday we spent a lot of time talking about advocacy for the poor. What!? In Europe and America?!
I’m afraid so. Poverty may be a relative reality but even after 12 years of a Labour government Britain still has 4 million poor children and 1.7 of those are ‘severely poor’ children. And according to a recent Pirls report levels of literacy and comprehension has declined steadily between 2001-2006.
It’s particularly disappointing under a Labour government. But that’s not the point. It’s to point out that Christians in flourishing communities simply can’t afford to pretend that speaking up for the poor (Proverbs 31:8,9) has nothing to do with us.
