Sri Lanka Ballots for Democracy
On Tuesday Sri Lanka will be carrying out its first democratic presidential vote in 30 years. So far the 2 month build up to the election has proven to be an uneasy political journey towards greater democracy which has claimed lives and injured its citizens...
Having vanquished the Tamil Tigers in May, Sri Lanka is still not free from fear. The fear now is that if President Mahinda Rajapaksa is voted out of office a blood bath nbsp;looks inevitable.
Like me you may never have been to Sri Lanka. But in one way or another we are all there. First because we should all share a passion for democracy. But many of us are there by proxy through the people we know and love; our colleagues and family members whose lives and livelihood may be shaped in the next few days.
And we must all hope and pray that as 14 million people go to the polls, political common sense will prevail and the role of independent auditors will support the growing desire for democracy.
